Unit 26 Assignment 3 Notes 1

First trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iCwtxJejik

At the start of the trailer we see Steve Carell, he has a big fan base and is a known comedian actor so straight away a certain type of audience would be interested in seeing this film when he jumps out the car.

Then we see Ryan Gosling dressed in a suit which makes teenage girls and women go to see this film because he's a sex symbol. Also we see Emma Stone which makes guys want to see the film because she is attractive.

The humour in this film and also the music and soundtrack of Muse builds up the trailer towards the end and gives the trailer a mood so families, teens, young couple, girls, women, guys and basically draws in alot of audiences.

Second Trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSn7JyijA8k

The title Carrie makes an audience want to see the film because it's based on a famous book by Stephen King, the mother singing at the start makes horror fans want to see the film, and people that are fans, the music and the camera shots and the tension brings an audience to the film.

It seems like an epic film because of the trailer and you can't really tell what genre it is, which makes a lot of people interested in seeing this film.

Unit 26 Assignment 2 Notes - Film Studies

Negatives of the MPAA

Kimberley Pierce 'Boys don't Cry' - NC - 17 - 'the studio won't release it'

Matt Stone 'Orgasmo' - received no notes on what to cut out (independent film)

But when he created South Park with (Paramount) he got given notes "cut this, this treatment, it was a completely different experience"

Kevin Smith "If you choose not to accept the rating, you can't market it"

  • Studios will not release a film if the rating is too high.

  • They do not like sexual content in films and will rate them higher if there is a lot of sexual content and want the film makers to cut out the scenes.
  • The rating on a film could mean making less money, less people will go and see it.
Jay Landers - each member has to sign an agreement, they are not allowed to talk about the MPAA.
  • They sensor films, they deliberately hide and sensor things when they are just meant to rate films.
  • They are taking away the film makers ability to make a choice.
  • The MPAA have a consecrative ideology - they have current ideas of what is right and what is wrong.
  • They rate films high because they don't like sexual content, although they seem to justify violence.
  • They are homophobic, gay sex scenes get rated higher than straight sex scenes and they don't have any homosexual people on the board.
  • They lie and say that raters have children aged 5-7 but it's not true as one rater has 'children' that are 23-25 and one doesn't even have a child.
  • They have a scale of what should or shouldn't be in a film, but do not tell the film makers what this scale is.
  • They try and sensor us and think artists can have their freedom just as long as the like it
  • They are manipulative and unfair.
  • Independent film makers have an unfair process and receive no notes and may be given an NC-17 although big studios releasing a film don't have any problems because they are business partners.
  • It's all men on the appeal board and a catholic priest so the ratings are based on religion and the rules from the bible.
  • They are a very powerful association and have friends with people in the government.
  • If you make a film and they kill someone but do not show blood you get a PG-13 but if there is blood you can an R, we should switch it and show children what violence actually does.
  • They are sexiest and do not like seeing women getting sexual pleasure although, women offensives like a women being beaten wouldn't get a higher rating.
QUOTES
Jamie Babbit:
Made a film to kind of support people and give them like hope? But as it involves lesbians its rated NC-17, this makes them come across homophobic.

Kevin Smith:
If you don't accept your rating, you can't run TV spots.

Matt Stone:
"They Just serve the studios, thats who pays their bills. They Just serve the studios."
His Film called 'Orgasmo' (independant film) received no notes on what he could do to get rid of his NC-17 rating. When he released south park under Paramount studios he just got told to "cut this, this..." But he said treatment was a completely different experience.
this shows a major advantage of having your film produced by a studio, you get better treatment and independant films don't really have a chance.

Bingham Ray:
"The system is set up to serve the studios"

Kevin Smith:
"if you choose not to accept your rating, you can't market it"

 ANALYSIS OF ANOTHER HUGHES SCENE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6uaxfye2Ig

In this Pretty in Pink scene we can hear diegetic sound, there is dialogue between the characters Ducky and Andie. Ducky is speaking in a angry/frustrated tone of voice with a fast pace. Due to the pace and tone that the dialogue is spoken the character seems upset which makes the audience feel sympathy for him. He also stutters throughout his dialogue, this also tells the audience that he is nervous about the things he is about to say. Andie's dialogue in this scene has a confused/high pitched tone this makes the audience aware that she doesn't realise that Ducky is in love with her. We can also hear ambient sound, the footsteps of the characters and also we can hear Ducky's hands slap on his leg because of his hand gestures whilst mid-speech this makes the audience feel his enthusiasm and interest for Andie. There is non diegetic sound in this scene at the end of Duckies speech we can hear the Pretty in Pink soundtrack, which was added on after filming and the reason for this track  is because it's a slow emotional piece of music which adds drama to Ducky walking away from the shot, which again makes the audience feel sorry for him.

PROVING THAT JOHN HUGHES IS AN AUTEUR

John Hughes is an auteur, he directed, produced and wrote his films The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Weird Science, Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, Home Alone, Uncle Buck. He had a personal artistic vision to make films for teenagers that every decade would be able to relate to, he used humour for his comedy dramas and powerful speeches to let the audience realise and understand know what teenagers are going through, in his visions he wants teens to break out of the moulds society has placed on them.

John Hughes gave teenage audiences credit for more intelligence and taste than Hollywood thought we had. He was the filmmaker who crystallised our attitudes and anxieties with just the right blend of teasing and sympathy. His comic dramas have a classicism and attention to dialogue and an elegance of narrative design. The non diegetic soundtracks in his films capture a winning mixture of optimism and melancholy, with a generosity of spirit tempered by a sense of right and wrong something essential in the experience of youth. John Hughes is an artist who was the voice of a generation any many other generations to come.

Mise en scene notes

The arrangement of everything that appears in the framing of the shot, the actors, lighting, décor, props, costume – is called mise-en-scène.

Décor

Décor refers to the decoration or decorative styles, comprising mainly of the set and props used in a movie. The director must be savvy to fathom how objects may bear significance in a deeper level, while also emphasising themes, creating meanings, and provoking thoughts.
For example An early scene from The Graduate opens with a close-up of Benjamin Braddock alone on his bed. Behind him is a fish tank, which may symbolically represent Ben’s entrapment in a life that he doesn’t want. Later in the movie, Ben finds himself at the bottom of a swimming pool, thus further elaborating on that concept.

Lighting

Unarguably one of the film elements that has the greatest power to evoke emotions, lighting must be manipulated by the director to accommodate his or her desires for the movie. The two broad types of lighting approaches are: low-key lighting and high-key lighting.

High-key lighting is often seen in romantic comedies and musicals, encompassing an even lighting pattern and avoiding dark areas in the frame. Everything looks bright with little to no shadow at all. High-key lighting has little dramatic effect, and it is often used in a scene with no tension.

Low-key lighting is often seen in horror movies and thrillers, comprising of a lighting pattern that has both bright and dark areas in the frame. The chiaroscuro (Italian: bright-dark) technique, long used by painters, is characterised by strong contrast, often employed to unnerve the audience.

Costume

The obvious purpose of costuming is to dress an actor according to his character. Lawyers wear suits, nurses wear scrubs, and a drifter could wear worn out shoes, ragged shirt, and baggy pants.
But, more than that, costuming can also be used to establish someone’s hierarchic level. Regimentals, for instance, bear the status of the person who wears it. And even the color may distinguish an enemy from a friend
