MPAA Notes

What is the MPAA? 

- The Motion Picture Association of America



Name the 6 studio's that are members of the mpaa? 


  • Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
  • Paramount Pictures Corporation
  • Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.
  • Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation
  • Universal City Studios LLC
  • Warner Bros. 
  • Entertainment Inc



What are the American film ratings? -

  • PG 
  • PG-13 
  • NC-17

What do each of the ratings mean? -

  • General Audiences. All Ages Admitted
  • Parental Guidance Suggested. Some Material May Not Be Suitable For Children.
  •  Parents Strongly Cautioned. Some Material May Be Inappropriate For Children Under 13.
  • Restricted. Children Under 17 Require Accompanying Parent or Adult Guardian
  • No One 17 and Under Admitted

Examples of a film for each American rating-



G RATED - Toy Story - This film is rated for all audiences because it's an animated film created for young children and the narrative is about a child's toys coming to life. There isn't any swearing or nudity in this film. 
PG RATED - Star Wars - It was PG Rated because its for older children due to the plot and the violence and fight scenes. 
PG-13 RATED - Titanic - This is for young teens due to the sex scene and death scenes 
R RATED -  Step Brothers - This has a higher rating because of the swearing, sex and humour of the film
NC-17 RATED - Kill Bill vol.1- This was given a NC-17 rating because it has a lot of strong violence, drug use, sex scenes and swearing.


Find an example of a film for each American rating and explain in 2 or 3 sentences, why it was given this rating (the sister website for the MPAA http://www.filmratings.com/ will help you search for a film and find out why it was rated) and why you think this was a good rating for the film?
